Top 5 Rarest Biomes in Minecraft & How to Locate Them

By Gio Nui2026-05-194 min read

With dozens of biomes spreading across Minecraft's Overworld, Nether, and End dimensions, most players will see endless plains, forests, and deserts. However, Minecraft contains extremely rare biome variants that only generate under precise temperature, humidity, and height conditions. Hunting these down in survival mode can take weeks of walking unless you know how to look.

1. Mushroom Fields (Mushroom Island)

Typically generating as isolated islands in the middle of vast oceans, Mushroom Fields is the safest biome in Minecraft. No hostile mobs can spawn here, even in unlit caves. It is famous for its mycelium blocks, giant mushrooms, and unique red Mooshroom cows.

Rarity: Extremely high. Because it requires a huge temperature divergence from surrounding ocean tiles, it typically generates thousands of blocks away from the primary continent spawn point.

2. Ice Spikes

A cold biome variant covered in snow, packed ice, and towering spires of blue ice. It is a stunning visual landscape that is perfect for building icy castles, but is difficult to survive in due to the complete lack of passive mobs and trees for wood.

3. Modified Badlands Plateau (Eroded Badlands)

Eroded Badlands contain beautiful striped pillars of colored terracotta, mimicking real-world geological formations like Bryce Canyon. The biome is rich in gold ore and contains mineshafts that generate on the surface rather than underground.

4. Bamboo Jungle

A dense variant of the Jungle biome dominated by high bamboo stalks, cocoa beans, pandas, and jungle temples. While regular jungles are somewhat common, Bamboo Jungle tiles are small and rare, making pandas one of the hardest mobs to find in survival mode.

5. Deep Dark

The only underground-only biome on the list. Generating deep beneath mountain ranges at coordinate elevations below Y=0, the Deep Dark is a eerie, dark biome covered in sculk blocks, sculk catalysts, and containing the massive Ancient Cities. Activating too many sculk shriekers here will summon the deadly Warden.
